Late Qing Dynasty: Spring Festival to soothe the soul

After the abolition of the slave trade in the civil war, the United States began to introduce coolies in China in order to make up for the shortage of labor, helping the us build railways and mine factories.

Many Chinese entered New York and entered Chinatown just like a slum.

The Spring Festival also entered New York with Chinese people's footsteps.

However, the Spring Festival at that time was only a tool for New York Chinese to comfort each other in difficult times.

Although the Spring Festival was just a couple of lanterns hung on the windows, there were a few red papers on the door.

But these simple spring festival programs have become a way to soothe their wounds.

During the war of resistance against Japan: to raise money for saving the nation's Spring Festival

The "918" incident awakened the Chinese people fighting in New York. It was because of the disagreement between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party that the Japanese imperialists had an opportunity.

Chinese are united to help the motherland as much as possible during the Spring Festival.

On the day of celebrating the Spring Festival of 1932, people in Chinatown began to save the nation.

The four girls, carrying a large Chinese flag, walked on the street. The residents on both sides of the street opened windows, and millions of bills began flying from the window to the national flag.

Because of the large number of people who donate money, the policemen who kept order kept shouting "back off"!

In January 1936, all the Chinese in New York established the Anti Japanese National Salvation Association.

In October of next year, the New York overseas Chinese Anti Japanese and national salvation rates were established.

In the Spring Festival after the Lugou Bridge incident in 1937, more than 7000 people in New York's Chinatown stopped all celebrations and took to the streets to collect donations to support the motherland's resistance.

The reason for the revival of the Spring Festival in Chinatown is not for entertainment, but William Lee, chairman of the Chinese Communist Party office, told reporters: "it is not the time to celebrate when the country is in a difficult position."

New China era: President of the United States visits new year to Chinese

China's resumption of the legitimate seat of the United Nations in 1971 and the two major events in the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States in 1979 have gradually changed the image of new China in the hearts of New York's expatriates.

During the Spring Festival, the Chinese people's overseas Chinese delegation Chong Zheng was the first to hang a five-star red flag.

The contents of the Spring Festival are also changing quietly.

In addition to dragon dance, lion dance, drum band and floats parade, there are Yangko team, waist drum team, martial arts performance and ethnic costumes show, colorful and unprecedented.

The Chinese government will also organize specialized literary and art troupes to go to New York to spend the Spring Festival with Chinese people.

At the same time, the Spring Festival also exceeded the Chinese category and became a common festival of Asian ethnic groups such as South Korea, Vietnam, Kampuchea, Laos, Indonesia and Malaysia.

More importantly, the Spring Festival has become a statutory holiday in New York.

In the Spring Festival of 2001, 1327 lanterns on the top of The Empire State Building in Manhattan District of New York were replaced by Chinese traditional red and golden colors.

In November 8, 2004, governor Pataki of New York formally signed the law to make the Chinese Lunar New Year a statutory holiday in New York.

Today, on the day of the Spring Festival, the president of the United States, the governor of New York, and the mayor of New York will give speeches to celebrate the outstanding contributions made by Chinese and Asian Americans to the United States, and to congratulate the Chinese and Asian people on their new year's greetings.

It can be said that the spring festival really took root in New York.
